QUALITATIVE RESEARCH METHODS FOR COLLECTING, ANALYSING AND INTERPRETING DATA

This intermediate-level course builds on prior knowledge about qualitative research approaches and their philosophical basis. The emphasis in this course will be on how the approaches affect data analysis and interpretation, as well as presenting findings in written and oral formats. The course is based on active involvement of learners through student-directed discussions and hands-on experiences, guidance and facilitation by graduate faculty with expertise in qualitative research, and interdisciplinary collaboration with faculty and classmates.

METHOD OF PRESENTATION OF COURSE MATERIAL

Students will meet once a week as a 3-hour seminar. Material will be covered through lectures, guest lecturers/presenters, small group activities and discussions, and postings on Avenue to Learn. Students will be expected to complete required readings before each class. Students are expected to actively participate in discussions and in-class activities, including commenting on each others’ work in a constructive manner. They will also be expected to journal or regularly write about their research experience, a tool for increasing the rigour of qualitative studies. Learners’ progress will be assessed based on individually written reports on various aspects of their work. Experiential learning is a key component of this course.
