Kylie Teggart wins CIHR scholarship award

Kylie Teggart, a PhD student in the McMaster School of Nursing, has received a high distinction: a Doctoral Research Award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
CIHR Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) awards are highly sought-after, and applicants must apply through a national competition. According to the CIHR, “The CGS Doctoral Awards administered by CIHR are intended to provide special recognition and support to students who are pursuing a doctoral degree in a health-related field in Canada. These candidates are expected to have an exceptionally high potential for future research achievement and productivity.”
Teggart is in her 2nd year of the PhD program. Her PhD supervisor is Dr. Rebecca Ganann, and her supervisory committee includes Drs. Denise Bryant-Lukosius, Nancy Carter, and Sarah Neil-Sztramko.
“I am incredibly honoured to receive a Doctoral Research Award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research,” says Teggart. “This vital support will allow me to progress with my PhD research. My research is focused on symptom management for outpatients with cancer, who often suffer because of pain, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and more during their treatments. There are guidelines available for oncology nurses to help patients manage these issues. However, in practice, these guidelines are not always followed. In this study, I will partner with oncology nurses, patients, caregivers, and hospital leaders to better understand why these guidelines are not always followed, and then identify what needs to happen for them to be used more often. Together, we will co-design strategies to address this gap. The goal is to decrease patient suffering and improve quality of life for individuals living with cancer.”
