Dr. Diana Sherifali has been accepted into the Salim Yusuf Emerging Leaders program of the World Heart Federation. She joins an elite group of global experts in heart health. Each year, the program selects 25 emerging leaders through a competitive process involving 100 countries.

“I’m very excited and humbled, and looking forward to collaborating and learning from other international emerging leaders,” says Sherifali, an associate professor in the School of Nursing.

According to the World Heart Federation (WHF), the program recognizes “outstanding individuals who have demonstrated long-term promise through their early careers, and creativity and passion for improving cardiovascular health (CVD) and preventing CVD. Created in 2014 by world-renowned leader in global cardiovascular disease research and WHF Past President, Professor Salim Yusuf, this WHF initiative is among the first international training programmes on cardiovascular health policy research, health systems and implementation science. The programme’s main objective is to build up capacity, professional development, mentorship and networking of WHF Emerging Leaders in 100 countries.”

This year’s focus is cardiovascular disease and diabetes. In their welcome letter to Sherifali, the group recognized her expertise and explained her admission to the program. “The broad goal of Diana’s research program is to prevent the consequences of heart disease in diabetes by optimizing the role of health coaching to support individuals with treatment adherence, education and support.”
