Janese Baartman took home the clinical instructor award from the Council of Ontario University Programs in Nursing (COUPN) this year.
Baartman is an intensive care unit nurse. She teaches PBL and is a clinical instructor at McMaster. "I have a passion for clinical education and in my teaching I aim to show students the importance of having a strong basis in theory and the sciences and the very practical implications this has on excellence in the clinical environment. I work primarily in second year when students are having their first interactions with real patients. I feel very privileged to be able to support and work with students at this stage of their learning by helping them develop strong clinical and critical thinking skills. I also strive to show students the importance of also focusing on the patient as an individual and the need for patient-centered empathetic care. I'm very grateful to work with such a supportive team in the School of Nursing and have been inspired by their commitment to educational excellence."
Dr. Ruth Chen is the assistant dean, academic resources and department education coordinator for the School of Nursing. “Janese’s dedication to teaching and her commitment to student learning extend beyond the clinical setting. She is recognized by students, colleagues, and leads for her teaching excellence in the practice setting and in the classroom. We are very happy that COUPN has recognized Janese with this provincial teaching award,” says Chen.
