New appointment for Dr. Bernice Downey

Dr. Bernice Downey has been appointed as the Acting Director, McMaster Indigenous Research Institute (MIRI) for a term of four months, effective 1 May 2019. Dr. Downey held a lead role in the development of MIRI.

Downey, a medical anthropologist of Ojibwe and Celtic heritage, is an assistant professor in the Faculty of Health Science, and cross-appointed to the School of Nursing and the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences.  She is also the Indigenous Health Lead for the development of an integrated Indigenous Health Initiative for the Faculty of Health Sciences.

An experienced administrator, facilitator and health educator, she holds a Heart & Stroke Foundation – Canadian Institute of Health Research funded Chair in Indigenous Women’s Heart & Brain Health. Her research interests include Indigenous population health, health literacy and Indigenous traditional knowledge, and health/research system reform for Indigenous populations. She is a lifelong advocate in the work to address the serious health inequities among Indigenous populations in Canada.
