Dr. Frances Wong, a visiting scholar and professor from the School of Nursing, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, presented the 2018 Hooker Distinguished Scholar Lecture on April 16 at McMaster University.

Dr. Wong is the President of the Hong Kong Academy of Nursing. The title of her presentation was “Transitional Care: Turning vision into reality”. Transitional care means health care support for patients as they move from one setting to another. One example might be leaving a hospital and going back to your own home or to a long-term care facility.

Dr. Sandra Carroll, Acting Associate Dean, Health Sciences and Director, School of Nursing, and Dr. Denise Bryant-Lukosius, Associate Professor, School of Nursing, introduced Dr. Wong to the audience.

“Dr. Wong provided an inspiring presentation on the development of transitional care models for diabetes and heart failure,” said Bryant-Lukosius. “This exceptional presentation illustrated the importance of conceptual and creative thinking in developing effective nursing interventions and models of care. It also provided a great example for faculty and graduate students on how to develop a successive program of research where each study builds on the results of previous studies.”

The Hooker Distinguished Scholar Lecture is named after Dr. Harry Lyman Hooker (1876-1979). He was born in Buffalo but  grew up in Hamilton. Dr. Hooker practiced internal medicine. Upon his death, he left McMaster University a $25 million bequest. In the Faculty of Health Sciences, this includes the annual awarding of the Hooker Distinguished University Professor which supports visits from distinguished speakers and lecturers.
