Dr. Lynn Martin has won a Leadership in Teaching & Learning Fellowship Program award. Her project, which will take place over the next two years, will enhance students’ clinical learning by adding quality video tutorials to the curriculum.

Throughout their 4-year undergraduate program at McMaster, students have the chance to practice their skills in various clinical settings including hospitals, nursing homes, community clinical under supervision by tutors. Videos can help reinforce this learning.

“YouTube videos are seen as an effective and efficient way of teaching clinical skills that is used and valued by students,” says Martin. “This project includes a quality assessment of YouTube clinical skills videos, integration and creation of YouTube videos into the BScN curriculum, and evaluation of the impact on student learning of clinical skills.”

In her proposal to the Leadership in Teaching & Learning Fellowship Program award wrote: “I have worked in the School of Nursing since 2000 and am currently a full-time Teaching Professor, teaching in the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs. I have been fortunate to work with the MacPherson Institute previously as the inaugural MacPherson Teaching Fellow on a project related to Quality Improvement, and more recently in the Students as Partners Initiative. My passion is nursing education, and my research, administration and leadership roles have been centred on creating learning environments where students can develop and excel into competent practitioners.”

The 2017 Leadership in Teaching & Learning Kick-off event took place on Friday, May 26 in the Great Hall, University Club.
