May 10, 2017

The School of Nursing is pleased to announce that Dr. Ruth Chen has assumed the role of Assistant Dean, Academic Resources (Nursing) and Department Education Coordinator (DEC) effective May 1, 2017.

This leadership role, previously held by Dr. Colleen McKey who retired in April 2017, is responsible for developing and maintaining the SON's academic resources to meet current and emerging needs across the Undergraduate Nursing Collaborative BScN Program and the Graduate Nursing Program. The Assistant Dean, Academic Resources (Nursing) and DEC is responsible for ensuring that all teaching contributions in the SON, including the contributions of Part-Time Instructors, Clinical Faculty, and Teaching Assistants, reflect education excellence and that teaching needs are addressed in a fiscally responsible and sustainable manner. This role is responsible for engaging with key stakeholders within and beyond the University concerning issues related to academic resources and assisting with the implementation of the SON's Strategic Vision.

Ruth Chen first joined the School of Nursing at McMaster University in 2002 and has a background in paediatric advanced practice nursing. She practiced as a Paediatric Nurse Practitioner in the US and in Canada. Her PhD focused on management of cognitive load in health professions education, and her experience with education research and scholarship inform her current administrative responsibilities as Chair of Academic Resources and DEC. She is actively engaged in the Undergraduate and Graduate Programs in the SON as a member of the BScN Operations committee, Graduate Admissions and Graduate thesis committees. Within the Faculty of Health Sciences, she teaches, and is a Curriculum and Admissions committee member, in the Health Sciences Education MSc Program, and she is the facilitator of a Community of Practice in the FHS's Academic Leadership Program. Across campus, she is the FHS representative on Undergraduate Council (UGC), the UGC Awards Committee Chair, and is on the Board of Directors for McMaster Children's Centre. Outside of McMaster University, she is the co-Chapter Head for YaleWomen Ontario, and engages with a network of Chapters worldwide under the Association of Yale Alumni.
