SMArTVIEW research project expands to more cardiac and vascular surgery patients thanks to new grant

May 5, 2017

Drs. McGillion, Devereaux, Yost, Carroll and their team have been funded successfully in the Ontario Centres of Excellence Health Technology Fund competition to expand the SMArTVIEW research program. The competition results were announced by Ministers Eric Hoskins and Navdeep Bains and by Ontario’s Chief Health Innovation Strategist, William Charnetsky.

“Securing funding from the Ontario Centres of Excellence Health Technology Fund will allow our team to increase the number of participants involved in our study and deepen our understanding of how our remote automated monitoring and connected care, hospital to home strategy, will impact important recovery outcomes such as postoperative complications and recovery experience,”  says McGillion.

SMArTVIEW is multi-faceted system that will help post-operative cardiac patients, who often face serious complications after heart surgery. Nurses will use the technology to monitor the vital signs of patients for 30 days after surgery – both in the hospital and after the patients have gone home. Patients wear radiofrequency-enabled devices and these devices send information wirelessly to nurses’ computer tablets. The program received federal support from the CIHR last year.
