BScN Program Awards

There are a number of awards available to nursing students throughout their undergraduate career at McMaster. Some awards are open to students at all sites, while others are location-specific. Students may also be eligible for additional university- or college-specific awards. 

For more information, we encourage you to visit the awards office at your institution or contact the awards representative from your site, listed ​right.

BScN Program Award Ceremony 

Outstanding undergraduate students who have received​ awards and/or scholarships from the university are invited to  celebrate their accomplishments alongside their families,  friends  and members of the McMaster community.

McMaster Site Awards

McMaster site nursing awards are primarily decided through student applications on AwardSpring on Mosaic. These applications are completed by students and may require a reference letter from faculty. Faculty can nominate students at the McMaster site for recognition awards for excellence in program related activities. Faculty nominations for a recognition award can occur at any time. A call for faculty nominations for recognition awards will go out at the end of the fall and winter terms.

Conestoga Awards open to McMaster Site Students

Awarded to student who has demonstrated excellence in both theory and nursing practice. The recipients must also have demonstrated exceptional achievements. GPA > 8.0

Basic BScN awards

The Doris Rumball Scholarship L1

Demonstrates exceptional achievements. Demonstrates consistent growth and proficiency in clinical experience.

The Martha Dawn Murray Prize

Awarded to a student who has demonstrated consistent exemplary care for patients and their families and has shown the ability to nurse with compassion, empathy and understanding. Consideration will be given to those who have demonstrated exceptional achievements.

The Krista Lynn Cantwell Memorial Scholarship

This award is given to a student who has shown academic diligence, a passion for nursing and who has been an active volunteer. (PBL or clinical) GPA >8.0

The Cathy Flis Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to a Level III BScN students who excels at caring and compassion in the clinical setting; demonstrates exceptional achievements and has a proven high academic standing. GPA > 8.0

The Doris Rumball Scholarship L3

Demonstrates exceptional achievements. Demonstrates consistent growth and proficiency in clinical experience.

 Roseanne Cerello-Lin Award Rosanne Cerello-Lin created this award in memory and to honor her mother Paula Burke.  Rosanne has great respect for our nursing program and wishes to acknowledge and recognize students for their contributions to the profession.
 Betty McInnes Scholarship  Awarded to student who demonstrates exceptional achievements within BScN program
 Gladys Irene Daniels Memorial Scholarship  Awarded to student who demonstrates compassionate care to patients
 Joyce Griffin Scholarship  Awarded to student with excellent academic standing and demonstrates exceptional achievements

All levels Basic BScN and RPN - BScN

The Wilda Pinkney Scholarship

Awarded to student who has demonstrated consistent growth and proficiency in the BScN program, and have an above-average level of clinical practice and academic performance. The recipients must have demonstrated excellent performance in theory and practical experience, as well as exceptional achievements. GPA > 8.0

Rebecca Davidson Memorial Scholarship

The fund was established in 2021 with a gift from Kim and Deborah to honor the memory of Kim’s mother, Rebecca.  She was a Nurse's Aide just before the War and had hoped to go to school for Nursing.  Due to the war, that never happened.  She was however, proud of Deborah who graduated from Mohawk with a Diploma in Nursing.  This award will be given to a 2nd or 3rd year RPN to BScN student who demonstrates caring and compassion toward patients and peers, and communicates openly and honestly in the nursing profession.

The Recognition Awards

Recognition awards are used to recognize students in any level for outstanding contributions within the BScN program that may not fit into the established nursing awards.

Levels I & II

The Ardelle Darling Memorial Award

Awarded to a second-year student who demonstrates caring and compassion toward patients and peers, communicates effectively and demonstrates an enthusiasm for the profession of nursing.

The Marilyn Kelly Memorial Award

Awarded to a first-year BScN student who demonstrates professionalism, respect and diligence in their studies.

BScN faculty must submit a letter supporting each nomination by the end of February each year.

Levels II & III

The Ross and Doris Dixon Charitable Foundation Community Service Awards in Nursing

Awarded to BScN students who are committed to community service, to be applied to tuition fees.

The Cosmetic Surgery Clinic of Waterloo: Nursing Achievement Award Awarded to a Conestoga site BScN student who has successfully completed year 2 or 3 and registered to proceed to year 3 or 4,  while achieving a GPA > 9.6 (80%). The student has demonstrated leadership, professionalism and an interest/aptitude in issues related to patient safety.

Levels III & IV

The Homewood Foundation Scholarship in Psychiatric Nursing

Awarded to a student who has completed either second or third year and who exhibits an interest in psychiatric nursing and has either completed a mental health placement or will be doing so in the future.

First preference is given to the child of an employee within the Homewood Corporation.

Level IV

The St. Mary’s General Hospital Educational Award for Continuing Education Awarded to a graduating student who is able to apply theory to clinical practice in a competent manner, demonstrates interest in postgraduate studies and obtains a high level of achievement in theory (B+ or greater).
The RNAO Waterloo Chapter Leadership Award Awarded to a graduating student who has demonstrated leadership or professional initiative on behalf of patient care and/or the nursing profession.
The Dr. Stanley F. Leavine Memorial Award Awarded to a graduating student who demonstrates a proficiency at applying theory to clinical practice, consistent personal and professional growth and high academic achievement (A-range)
The Guelph General Hospital ​Volunteer Association Award Awarded to a graduating full-time student who is a resident of Waterloo-Wellington region and achieves the highest academic standing (No nomination required)

The RPN to BScN Leadership Award

Awarded to a graduating RPN – BSCN student who has demonstrated leadership and initiative in the BScN Program.

 

McMaster Site Awards Open to Conestoga Site Students.

Awarded to a graduating student-member of the RNAO who demonstrates professional development through participation in professional Nursing Student Association Activities and community-based activities.

The awards help students in different levels and area of practice and trances from baccalaureate, masters and nurse practitioner, doctoral, aboriginal, internationally educated nurses and certification awards. 

 

Canadian Nursing Students’ Association

The Canadian Nursing Students’ Association is the national voice of Canadian nursing students. Their goal is to increase the legal, ethical, professional, and education aspects which are an integral part of nursing. CNSA is actively dedicated to the positive promotion of nurses and the nursing profession as a whole. 

 

Ontario Nurses’ Association

 The ONA the union representing registered nurses and allied health professional working across Ontario. The ONA is a proactive union committed to improving the economic welfare and quality of work-life for their members, to enable them to provide high-quality health care.

The McMaster University Nursing Students Society offers four awards annually; students are recognized for ​their contributions and achievements within the nursing and general community.

MUNSS Community Advocacy Award 

 $500

The recipient of this award is one who identifies as a person of colour or Indigenous background, who has demonstrated and takes great pride in their devotion to the community (school, local community, or a combination of both) through their contribution(s) and unpaid involvement.  N1K02 Service Learning curriculum work will be considered, but only in addition to other efforts. This award is open to students in all sites (McMaster, Mohawk, Conestoga), all levels (1,2,3,4) and all streams (Basic, Accelerated, RPN-BScN), however, it is limited solely for individuals who identify as people of colour or Indigenous background.  

MUNSS Leadership in Nursing Award   $500

The recipient of this award has demonstrated leadership abilities that reflect responsibility and dedication to positive change within the McMaster Nursing Community. The award recipient has acted as a role model for their fellow students and is highly looked up to by their peers.

MUNSS Level 4 Student of Distinction Award

$500

The recipient of this award is a Level 4 nursing student who has consistently demonstrated leadership, initiative and a commitment to the McMaster Nursing Community throughout their years as a BScN student. The recipient’s dedication has contributed greatly to the McMaster Nursing Community and related communities by promoting collaboration and professionalism in nursing.

MUNSS Unsung Hero Award  $500

This is a peer-nominated award open to students in all sites (McMaster, Mohawk and Conestoga), all levels (1,2,3,4) and all streams (Basic, Accelerated, RPN-BScN). 

It recognizes a student who shows traits of subtle leadership, who has persevered to get to where they are now, and who goes above and beyond for their peers without seeking recognition.

MUNSS Survive and Thrive Award
 $500 The recipient of this award is a level 1 nursing student who has endured some sort of challenge or adversity throughtout their liefteime, and has grown as a result of such challenge (s).  This person has utilized their personal experiences for the benefit of those around them and consistently attempts to better themselves and others.
