McMaster Degree:
I graduated from the McMaster BScN Program in 2006.
Current Position:
I’m currently working in the ER at the Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital and teaching for McMaster University and Western University.
How I got here:
I started my career on the Neurosurgical floor (7 West) at the Hamilton General where I had one of my 4th year clinical placements. I spent 2 years there and then moved to the Neuro/Trauma ICU, also at the General. I spent 8 incredible years there and then my family chose to move to London, Ontario and I moved to the ER at the Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital. I began teaching, part time, for McMaster in the BScN program in 2014 and when we moved to London, added Western to the mix as well. I completed a Masters of Education in 2015 from the University of Toronto.
Why I chose McMaster:
I chose the School of Nursing at McMaster because it had a great reputation as being an innovative school; also, both my parents graduated from McMaster! Throughout my time at McMaster I very much appreciated the small group learning and tight knit community that the School of Nursing provided.
How my experience at Mac has helped me:
McMaster helped me to develop a strong knowledge base in both physical nursing skills, theory and the profession of nursing as a whole. It provided the opportunity to ‘learn how to learn’, a skill which has proven invaluable when taking on new opportunities as well as when confronted with the variety of patients and diagnoses in a critical care environment. The program provided me with insight and the ability to critically think through situations in a way that is patient centered and focused on interprofessional collaboration. The BScN Program also helped to prepare me for graduate studies and to take on leadership and research roles within nursing.
