Insulin delivery is changing

“The future is here in insulin delivery,” says Lisa Maks, an Assistant Clinical Professor in McMaster School of Nursing and a Diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialist at Hamilton Health Sciences (Juravinski site).
Maks is part of the team leading the replacement of syringes with insulin pens as the way to inject insulin in the hospital. She was also involved in the research study showing that insulin pens are a safer method of delivering insulin. Hamilton Health Sciences and the University Health Network have published an Insulin Pen Implementation Toolkit that guides other hospital sites on how to convert from syringes to insulin pens for in-patient settings.
Safety and accuracy are the key reasons for adopting insulin pens. For more information, see “Infographic: Insulin Pens at Work”.
The School of Nursing Faculty Orientation day (August 29) will include an afternoon session on insulin pen conversions.
