In Conversation With: Marianne Chew, Operations Manager at the School of Nursing
We recently spoke with Marianne Chew, the Operations Manager here at the School of Nursing, to learn more about herself and her significant role within the school.
What is your role here at McMaster School of Nursing? What does that entail?
My role is Operations Manager at the School of Nursing. The main function of this role is to provide human resources and operational support that allows all School of Nursing faculty members and administrative and research staff to do their jobs – develop and deliver Nursing programs and conduct research within an inclusive environment. This could mean helping to build teams as needed via recruitment, providing support to managers and staff, and holding ourselves accountable to support an environment that promotes equity, diversity, inclusion and overall well-being.
What is your favourite part about your job/role?
My favourite part of my role comes whenever I am able to improve a situation, whether it be filling a needed position so that a group has the required support to complete their work, supporting the tenure and promotion process so that a faculty member is recognized for their contributions, or providing coaching or support to enable an employee to grow within their role.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
In my free time I enjoy spending time with my kids, going for hikes, or drinking a good tea.
What is an interesting fact about you?
I bike to work in all seasons so long as the roads aren’t (too) icy.
Why did you choose to work at McMaster?
McMaster has been an important part of my life for many years now. I first came to McMaster for an undergraduate degree in Biology and I never left! It is a place that fosters learning and development, both for students who attend here and for those who work here. It is a great place to be!
