Nursing Concepts in Continence Care Certificate of Professional Learning launches
McMaster University Continuing Education and the School of Nursing have partnered to offer the Nursing Concepts in Continence Care program that will provide healthcare professionals the knowledge and skills to manage and treat incontinence in care settings.
The program which consists of three courses is also available as elective courses for undergraduate nursing students. The introductory course 3BE4 has been offered as an elective course in the undergraduate nursing program since September 2019. Starting this Spring the other two courses will be available to the students. Students who have completed 3BE4 were asked to describe the impact of the course. Here is a sample of their responses:
“It really raised my awareness and understanding of incontinence and the clinical implications for nursing care.”
“It increased both my knowledge of incontinence but also the direct application to patient care.”
“It is a challenging course but worth the effort.”
As the creator of this certificate program, Jennifer Skelly PhD RN, reports, “Once you feel comfortable understanding the issues surrounding incontinence, you feel tremendous satisfaction helping an individual learn how to manage it and get their lives back. As a nurse being able to offer holistic and empathetic care to vulnerable people is one of the things that is special in our profession.”
This certificate program replaces the Nurse Continence Advisory (NCA) Program originally only available in the School of Nursing.
